PINE GROVE – Carl W. “Doc” Reed, 86, passed away Sunday, November 13, 2011, at his home. Born on November 25, 1924, in Frystown, he was a son of the late Elmer F. and Cora E. Marks Reed. Carl was a 1942 graduate of Pine Grove High School and was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pine Grove where he had served on the Church Council. Carl was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 24 years and had served during the Vietnam War. In 1969 he completed the photographic Tech. training course.
He received the Air Medal w/2OLC, Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal w/3OLC, the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 1BSS, , Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Air Force Longvity Service Award w/1SilOLC. He was a life Member of the Pine Grove V.F.W. Post 3432, Life member of the Veterans of the Vietnam War Post 1342, and a member of the Pine Grove American Legion Post 374. Carl had also worked at and retired from Indiantown Gap Military Reservation in Annville. He enjoyed target archery and was a life member of the Swatara Archers in Pine Grove. Carl enjoyed photography and for many years had been a photographer for the Press Herald.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, Charles J. Reed, Warren Reed; and three sisters, Arlene Griffiths, Helen Keely and Grace Koehn. Surviving are his wife of 35 years, June Schaeffer Reed; a son, Stephen Reed of Windber; one daughter, Sharon Stoudt of Utah; and six grandchildren. Services will be held in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Thursday at 11 a.m. with Dr. Richard Schoenleber officiating.
